Summer skin care

The skin is usually more vulnerable in summer. And not just because we wear less clothes and the sun's radiation is stronger. Light and heat have several effects on our body and our skin can respond in the form of various conditions, which we will talk about later. Luckily, you will see that with proper summer skin care, you can protect yourself and, not only that, but you can also get a nice tan and enjoy the sun in a healthy way.

Why the skin is most dangerous in summer?

Basically, because the typical conditions of summer are more aggressive with our skin than in other seasons:

- UVA radiation from the sun increases.

- When it gets hotter, you sweat more and, as a result, you can suffer from slight dehydration without realizing it. This also affects your skin.

- Excess external moisture around your body can bring about problems with fungi, such as athlete's foot.

- The dermis may acquire a dry, flaky, or cracked appearance because of the above factors.

- In the long term, the sun can cause skin cancer.

Summer skin care

Both the protection and hydration of the dermis and an adequate diet are important for summer skincare. Let's start with the fundamentals: cleansing and hydration.

External care

Hydration

Drinking water will help you stay hydrated inside your body, and it will increase skin elasticity. Likewise, the shower has a positive effect in the sense that it moistens your skin and improves its transpiration; but, on the other hand, soaps break the first barrier of protection that you skin has, and the excess of water can lead to the loss of the skin’s layer of natural fat that protects it. We recommend using moisturizing body milk after showering, sunbathing, and before going to bed. As you sleep, your skin renews itself and is more susceptible to moisturizing treatments.

Cleaning and exfoliation

Hygiene is very important for the skin. Not only to avoid health problems, but also to make you look radiant regardless of the weather. So don't give up the shower and clean your face in the morning and evening with products that are suitable for your skin type.

In addition, we recommend exfoliating the skin before subjecting it to the sun or heat. By doing so, you eliminate dead cells and, thus, the skin can perspire better, eliminate toxins, and get a more even tan. You may feel that it is drier than normal afterwards because exfoliating scrubs are more aggressive than other cleansers and remove the skin's fat barrier. But you can correct this by applying moisturizer afterwards.

Uses sun protection

Uses sun protection

Even if you're not getting burnt, or if it is cloudy or cold, UVA rays cause irreversible damage to your skin. Ideally, do not exceed the recommended time limit for sun exposure. But as you cannot always avoid the sun, you may have to turn to these products. Thus, you will also avoid premature aging, the appearance of spots on the skin with age, and serious diseases such as cancer.

After sun, prolongs tanning and hydrates

As we have pointed out, you should apply moisturizer after sunbathing, but it is better if you use after sun cream. It is specially formulated to offer intense hydration and at the same time light and easy absorption, so as not to leave you with the oily or sticky feel that is so frequent when applying other creams. In addition, after sun cream is usually enriched with nutrients that help prolong the tan and prevent the negative effects of the sun such as inflammation, redness, and flaking.

The best time to apply it. After the shower or before you go to sleep. This is when your skin is more receptive and will absorb the after-sun cream better.

Avoid exposure to the sun during peak hours

We have already talked about the negative effects of the sun. But it's particularly intense at midday. Even if you use creams, high temperatures can especially dehydrate you. If you have no choice but to go out, in addition to sunscreen, wear a hat or cap and seek shelter under an umbrella or awnings.

Internal care.

Drink two litters of water a day

The amount of water you need depends on your weight, but in summer no one should drink less than two litters. In addition to drinking pure water, remember to eat fruit and other foods with plenty of water. Also consider juices and infusions. However, remember that coffee and alcoholic beverages have a dehydrating effect, so you'll need to drink more water if you drink them. Drink a little more after sunbathing or exercising.

A balanced diet

As we said, fruit contains a lot of water. But it also contains vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients and antioxidants which are very positive for the skin. This will help protect your skin from the sun and heat without you noticing.

Especially summer fruits such as watermelon, melon, strawberries, cherries, and peaches will be your allies to keep your skin radiant in summer.

Vegetables in salads also contain lots of water, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidant agents. The same happens with cold soups such as gazpacho and salmorejo. These are essential for skin care in the summer.

We must also highlight nuts and olive oil, rich in vitamin E, which has an antioxidant and protective effect on the skin from within. Nuts also contain B vitamins, which are very necessary to keep the skin in an optimal state.

It is also important that you do not have large meals but instead divide them into four or five smaller meals throughout the day.

We also recommend that you leave spoon dishes, very fatty dishes, and those that are heavy to digest for the winter months. To take care of your skin in summer, try cold soups, salads, tapas, pasta with vegetables, etc. And it will always be better to grill than to fry.

As you can see, with these summer skin care tips, you will find that it is possible to enjoy much more of the sun without your body suffering. It’s that easy.
